I'd love to hear from you
Hi! I'm Lekha, an artist based in Chennai, India. Heres a little bit more about me, my process and the thoughts behind my paintings. If any of this clicks with you and you want to learn more, or if you're interested in making any of these paintings yours or if you simply want to connect, drop me a line!
How would you describe your art
My Art is about places I'm at, things I enjoy, fleeting memories, imagined joy... I try and capture a moment with every piece and the mood it brings with it. I sometimes like to call it POV art. It's mostly feel-good. Joyful. Vibrant. Making art takes me to my happy place and thats what usually translates to the canvas.
How did you get into Art?
I've been painting for a long time - since my early childhood. Not formally. I didn't go to art school. I went to design school - I'm a post graduate of the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design, and I studied Fashion and Textile Design. I'm a designer - thats my day job. Been doing it for over 23 years now. I still love it. I'm as much a designer as I'm an artist. And they inform each other - my two worlds. One of my favourite things to create and paint are textile-driven patterns and motifs.
And what else can we see in your paintings?
I love textures. I love seeing the brushstrokes within a painting and palette knife marks. I love seeing a bit of relief within the surface of my paintings. As mentioned before, I love patterns. Especially abstract or geometric patterns. Or anything with leaves. Or wild florals. For me these are important and I use textures, patterns and colours in my paintings to convey mood.
And whats with the feet?
I like drawing feet because it sort of underlines that POV moment - kind of like a signature or a "Lekha was here" stamp. A selfie of sorts. I'm capturing a scene, a place, a moment in time or my imagination and I'm also putting a piece of me in it.
I do also like drawing hands and faces and figures. But thematically I think the feet work really well.
In the very crowded space of Art, what makes your paintings stand out?
:) I'm not sure. I paint because I love it. It makes me happy to create these paintings. I can't even explain it. When I'm at my canvas, time melts away, the whole world melts away... if someone sees my paintings, and it resonates with them, I consider it a bonus. As far as I'm concerned, the only job my art has is to just be. I've created. I'll keep creating and thats about it.
